Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu of Little Tokyo is an independent, community dojo propagating traditional Matsubayashi-ryu Karatedo, with lineage tracing back to Nagamine Shoshin. We are a non-commercial dojo, practicing out of the social hall of Centenary United Methodist Church; although not formally affiliated with the church, we are deeply involved with the Little Tokyo and surrounding Japanese American community, in which Centenary has historically played a major role. We train in a familial - yet traditionally disciplined - atmosphere, and frequently contribute to local events in our community, sharing this cultural art through demonstrations and workshops.
The art of Matsubayashi-ryu is a subsystem of Shorin-ryu, one of the main systems of Okinawan Karatedo. Founded in 1947 by Nagamine Shoshin (1907-1997), it is a culmination of his lifetime of study with such revered teachers as Arakaki Ankichi, Kyan Chotoku, and Motobu Choki, among others.
Our traditional curriculum is firmly grounded in basics, including the eighteen kata (Fukyugata 1-2, Pinan 1-5, Naihanchi 1-3, Ananku, Wankan, Rohai, Wanshu, Passai, Gojushiho, Chinto, Kusanku) and seven yakusoku kumite handed down by Nagamine Sensei.
Although Nagamine Sensei also held ranks in both Judo and Kendo, he dedicated his life's work to the study and propagation of Karatedo, for which, in 1988, he was awarded the Fifth Class Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese Government.
